WEB PUBLISHING GUIDELINES
Introduction
The
International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers (ISDUP) website’s
primary purpose is to communicate effectively with its members and the
world in general. The website provides information to the ISDUP
members and the world about curriculum, instruction, school-authorized
activities and other general information. These procedures will apply to all web pages supported
on the ISDUP server. ISDUP board members are
expected to abide by the highest standards of quality and
responsibility.
Benefits
of Web Publishing
- It's fast.
Information is accessible as soon as material is published on the
website.
- Save paper, save
a tree. No more copying: publish once to the website and its
accessible and printable.
- Updating is simple.
When information changes, its update once. The information is available
the next time the website is browsed.
- Full color at no
additional cost. The website can include examples, samples,
illustrations, photographs -- even multimedia -- to make a point more
effectively.
- Saves money.
Publish once to the website is considerably cheaper than printing,
binding, distributing, mailing, and managing updates.
- It's searchable.
All text on the website is accessible through the search function.
- Archives.
Electronic copies of old information can be stored.
Process to Publish to the Website
- ISDUP board members must submit new
m aterial must be reviewed and approved by the
International president before it's published on the website.
- The new material and/or
modifications must be submitted as a paper copy. Electronic files
aren't acceptable.
- The approved paper copy
will be initialed by the International president who'll give the
approved copy to the webmaster.
- The webmaster will accept
new material and/or modifications information only from the International president.
- Submitter of new material and/or modifications must use well-edited text,
including correct grammar and spelling.
- Copyrighted material
can't be used on the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers
website without express, written permission of the
copyright-holder. The permission letter and the material is given
to the webmaster.
- Webpages will be tested in multiple browsers to
ensure they look as intended.
- The webmaster will watch
for broken links or missing graphics.
- Observe fair use
procedures, as well as all applicable copyright laws.
- Use factually correct
information.
Appropriate Website Content
- All material, textual
and graphic, will be either original, in the public domain, or posted
with the express written permission of its rightful owner.
- Links will not be made
to sites that are commercial in nature, nor will information on the
website promote or advertise any commercial services or political
agenda.

Links to sites
outside the website are only allowed to sites that comply with the ISDUP
policy.
Safety and Liabilty Issues
relating to the Website
- By default, limited
information about ISDUP members is permitted for publication on
the website. Information should be limited to the following items (and
of a professional nature):
- Name
- Official ISDUP email
address
- Current assignment
- Images of staff members should only be used with the
staff member’s permission. This permission must be acquired before
the photo is published on the web page.
- It must be understood that
personal information is defined as any data that violates an ISDUP
member’s right to privacy, or that may endanger their safety. Personal
information is considered to be such information such as home address
and phone number, neighborhood, personal email addresses, information
regarding relatives, etc.
- Staff and official ISDUP
email system addresses are not to be considered private and are not
specifically protected by this definition and may be published as
needed without prior consent.
- Because of offensive
language and abusives the following won't be a part of the official
ISDUP web site:
- blog
- guest book
- chat room
Website
Organization
- Each page will be
designed with the audience and goal in mind.
- Basic page format will
be used, e.g. use the same background, locate navigation tools in the
same place on the page, have consistent link appearance, and have
consistent font size and type.
- The website will not be
used as a forum for political or personal philosophy.
- The website will not
contain a link to the personal webpages of any ISDUP board member.
- All content shall
conform to ISDUP Policies, established procedures and copyright laws;
and shall not violate state, federal or local laws.
- The ISDUP retains all
proprietary rights to the website and pages hosted on its server,
without written authorization to the contrary.
- Links to potentially
offensive materials are not permitted.
- The website will comply,
as much as possible, with the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
(WCAG) and
Plan
It. Design It. Build It. Put Your Web Site to Work
- Source
citations will be given when appropriate.
Keep
the Website Current
- Pages should be checked
regularly to ensure that links are working and meet ISDUP standards. All
internal and external links will be checked work properly.
- Remove expired
date-related items.
- Maintain and update files by removing
unneeded or outdated files.
Grammar and Spelling
- All pages should be
grammatically correct.
- All words should be
spelled correctly - webpages should be spell checked.
- Acronyms will not be
used unless associated with phrase they represent, ie, ISDUP
(International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers).
Navigation
- All pages should include
a link back to the website home page
- Website will not contain
a link to the personal web pages or home email address of any member,
- Links to potentially offensive materials are not
permitted.
Backgrounds
- Background is a light
colored parchment JPG and is used on each webpage allowing pages to
reload quicker and the user to view pages with ease.
- A background won't be
used to convey information.
- "Name" colors won't be used. For example, This is a
tag not supported by all browsers. The hexadecimal number for colors
will be used.
Copyrights and Copyright Issues
- All website authors must follow all
applicable and existing copyright laws pertaining to the use of text,
images, graphics, sounds, and hyperlinks to other web
sites/pages.
- The International
Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers retains proprietary rights to the
website/pages hosted on its server.
- As an educational, heritage, and cultural institution
we should be aware of the need of conforming to all laws, regardless of
how they may be perceived on the Internet. A pamphlet
"Copyright: What You Need To
Know"
will help us keep copyright
laws.
Naming Structure
- Use all lower-case
letters for names of documents and graphics.
- Do NOT use any spaces or other symbols in naming HTML
documents or graphics.
Graphics and Media
The following guidelines
are required in regards to graphics and photographic images used on the
website:
- Images should be less
than 50k.
- Images need to be in GIF
or JPEG (JPG) format.
- Images should be
displayed with width and height set. Large images should be avoided.
- GIF format will be used
for drawings and line art.
- Copyrighted images and graphics will not be used
without express, written permission from the owner.
Page Guidelines

Make page titles
specific with regards to each page’s content when applicable.
- Create a top-level home
page that is short, includes the purpose of the web page, and links to
additional pages. Additional web pages should provide detailed
information and contain links to the appropriate web site home page.
- Test all of the links,
scripts, and components in the page(s) to make sure that they have the
desired performance in various browsers.
- Identify the audience to
be served by the web page.
- Investigate what already
exists before beginning the design of a page.
- Plan fonts and graphics
with the audience in mind.
- Maintain uniformity for
ease of reading and site navigation.
- Clarify the organization
of the web site’s information (site map).
- Use graphics, video, and
audio that serve an appropriate purpose.
- Update web pages on a
regular basis and date time-critical information.
- Use backgrounds that
allow for easy viewing of the material presented.
- Navigational Links - It is suggested that
each page contain clear links to the sponsoring site's home page and/or
higher-level pages. There should always be navigational clues to help
users find their way around (a "back" button is not always adequate).
- Rights and Use Information - Each page
and/or website will contain ISDUP's Rights and Use Information.
- Privacy Policy - Each page and/or website
will contain ISDUP's Privacy Policy.
- Contact Information - Out of courtesy to
Internet users, each page shall contain contact information for the
content sponsor.
- Copyright Notice - Each page shall contain
a copyright notice which reserves the ISDUP's rights.
