  What is OUTREACH?

Daughters of Utah Pioneers' Outreach is “to reach out” to the community by representing and honoring the pioneer era in order for citizens to develop a greater understanding, awareness and appreciation for the lives of pioneers and our collective heritage.

Our Outreach goal is to help others learn by extending information, activities, services and education about our Pioneer ancestry and traditions and get them involved where possible - engaging them through programs and other functions such as historical collections, museum visits, parades, educational opportunities, events, pageants, etc.

“Heart of a Pioneer” - School Assembly Program

A current program in the Salt Lake Valley is being offered to assist Fourth grade teachers educate their students about Utah history and heritage (curriculum studies for 4th Grade). Local elementary schools have an opportunity to have a professional assembly for all their students entitled “Heart of a Pioneer”.

After a school has enrolled in the program, Daughters of Utah Pioneers docents, as well as representatives from This Is The Place Heritage Park, go to the elementary school and present a one hour program for the 4th graders. The instructors are in period costume, briefly tell a little about the pioneers, and bring artifacts that represent pioneer history. The students are prepared to perform at an assembly presented for the entire school at a later date, including activities such as: Pioneer Dance, Pioneer Songwriting, Pioneer Poetry and Pioneer Games.

At this 45 minute general assembly, The 'Willingly Band', a group of four musicians lead by Clive Romney, come to the school and entertain the students in a fun and educational way. The 4th graders present their poetry and songs, and they demonstrate the Virginia Reel and pioneer toys.

The 'Heart of a Pioneer’ assembly will create in the hearts of the participants an understanding of what the first Pioneer settlers of the state of Utah endured, an appreciation for their ingenuity and creativity, a desire to adopt their outstanding traits, and a lasting memory of features of our state.

The charge for the 'Heart of a Pioneer' school assembly is $175.00, which includes the pre -training, along with a packet and CD for the 4th grade. Call 801-924-7534 for more information or to schedule an assembly, or go to thisistheplace.org or dupinternational.org.
