Lesson Development
2007-2008: Our Heritage: Our Responsibility

Lesson Presentation

1.  A lesson should be approximately 25 minutes.

2.  Lesson leaders should only give what can be presented in the allotted time. Use a timer, then the daughters in your camp will know you are staying within your time limit.

3.  You must read the entire lesson to decide what is most interesting to present. At the beginning of the year, let your camp members know which states are to be presented and ask them if they have a personal connection with any of these areas. You do not need to search for additional material; we have already done the research and want the information in the lessons presented.

4.  The following are different ideas on how to give a lesson and involve others in presenting it.

        a. First person stories
        b. Skits or role play
        c. Clever picture displays
        d. Artifacts or other visual aids
        e. Individual maps and pictures
        f.  Large maps

Caution: Do not give camp members an open-ended assignment because they may take your entire lesson time.

Personal Histories

1.  The personal history should be approximately 15 minutes. (If longer, the remainder can be given at the next camp meeting).

2.  These personal histories are one of the most important parts of our organization. It is our responsibility to record histories on all the pioneers. After they are presented in your camp, they should be given to your camp historian with three title pages. One title page stays in the camp, then the historian sends the histories to the company historian who keeps one title page. She sends each history with its title page to the International DUP History Department. Company historians should send the histories in as they are received and not wait to collect several.

3.  Remind the daughters that these histories are of prime importance. It is from them that we have the resource to help write the lessons. The lessons are not to be used for someone's personal history. The histories they present should be of their own personal ancestry.

Company Seminar

1.  Usually August is the best month to hold this meeting..

2.  It is for all the camp positions, so there should be a lesson department.

3.  The camps are not sent the information you receive at the International DUP Seminar; therefore, it is important that you company leaders copy this information and present it to your caps at your company seminar. They need to have this CURRENT material.
