Welcome to the official site for The International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers. The DUP was organized solely for historical, educational and public purposes and is completely non-political and non-sectarian. It is dedicated to perpetuating the names and achievements of those men, women, and children who founded our Utah commonwealth. We seek to encompass a broad scope of services, ranging from the preservation of historic landmarks to the education of thousands of school children and other citizens about their pioneer forebears.

Pioneer Memorial Museum Receives State Honor

Congratulations! In June 2008, the Pioneer Memorial Museum received the “State Certification Award for Excellence in all Areas of Museum Operation” from the Utah Office of Museum Services. The museum is recognized for completing Phase I of the statewide performance goals and upholding professional museum standards. Working with OMS, the Artifacts Office completed a checklist of criteria, meeting the expectations of a certified professional museum in Utah. The Office of Museum Services presented the Pioneer Memorial Museum with a plaque certifying the accomplishment. Look for this plaque in the foyer next time you visit the museum! Contact OMS if you'd like to apply for certification with your local museum. Their website is: http://museums.utah.gov/

Wanted: Museum Volunteers!

Are you exceptionally drawn to the artifacts at the museum? Would you like to be a part of their preservation, care, and display? The Pioneer Memorial Museum is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who would like to learn about care and handling of artifacts, as well as contribute to labeling and exhibits.  The Artifacts Office will train prospective volunteers in the area of their interests. Candidates should be able to contribute a minimum of four hours each week (more is welcome, of course).  Please contact us at pioneermemorialmuseum@gmail.com if you are interested.

2008 Days of '47 Royalty Crowned

A beautiful Queen and two Attendants were crowned on April 26, 2008, at the Conference Center Little Theater to reign at the Days of ’47 celebrations. Callie Cockrell was chosen as queen and Starlee Holman and Kristalee Bird are first and second attendants. (Photo: Great Salt Lake Photos)

Callie Cockrell (center) of Salt Lake City Utah, is the daughter of John and Shauneen Cockrell. She was Chair for Operation Smile Collegiate 2008 5K fund raiser “Smile for Every Mile,” raising over $4,000. Recognized for over 100 hours of volunteer work in the Salt Lake City community, she created a presentation promoting the importance of nutrition, fire prevention, and personal hygiene used by orphanages around the world. Callie would love to obtain a Broadcast/Journalism degree from BYU with honors. An interesting highlight for her was when she "rode a camel and a donkey, hiked the ruins of Petra in Jordan, and met the Ambassador of China.” She said “My pioneer ancestors have been beacons of light and strength for me.”

Starlee Holman’s (left) parents are Kevin and Marla Holman. Starlee volunteered for "Race for the Cure," Memory Grove Cleanup, and Art Projects at Shriners Hospital for Children. She graduated high school with honors in GPA and Citizenship and is now participating in the Honors Program and is on the Dean's List at the University of Utah. She said, “Everyone in my family has red hair.” She donated some of her red hair to Locks of Love. She is “grateful for the sacrifices my ancestors made to come to Utah and help settle this great land. I am glad I have their great example. Serving in the royalty will be my way of paying tribute to the amazing legacy I have.”

Kristalee Bird (right) lives in South Jordan and is the daughter of Dennis and Merrily Bird. Kristalee had the opportunity to give the welcome speech to the Ambassador of South Africa when he visited Utah in preparation for the Olympics. She has been awarded superior ratings in piano competitions, and she was given a presidents award in Academics in high school. She enjoyed working as a river guide with rafting tours and would like to complete an “Iron Man” race one day. Kristalee is working toward a double major in Spanish and Communications. She said “I may not have been chosen to live in the pioneer days, but I can look to the examples they set of faith, determination, love, and unity to help me through my life trials now.

Bette Barton, President of the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers remarked that “the pageant has been an annual event since 1931 when Margaret Young was crowned the Queen of the Covered Wagon Days. The name was changed in 1947 to the Days of 47. The rules require that contestants are women with a pioneer ancestry, are between ages 18-25, have never been married and uphold high moral standards. The contestants are judged by their accomplishments, poise, stage presence, and service and communication skills.”

These young women represent modern day pioneers who are preparing themselves for the future. As they travel around this summer they will be an example to all young women who hear their message. They will represent the State of Utah well and exemplify the theme “Still Pioneering Together.”

To schedule events in which you would like the 2008 Royalty to participate, contact Jennifer Day at 694-3256 or redutedaisy@comcast.net. You may also contact Candy Dolan  at 277-1020 or candies.dolan@hsc.utah.edu.
