Pioneer Memorial Museum is rapidly
approaching its 60th year in existence. It was dedicated 23 July
1950. As with all older buildings time has come for renovation if it is
to retain its integrity of safely preserving the artifacts so vital to honoring
our pioneer progenitors. The most pressing need at this time is
replacement and modernizing the electrical system and at the same time
maintaining historical value of Pioneer Memorial Museum. When this
building was constructed, electrical needs were much different than they are
now. Lighting, and soon an air conditioner, were the basic needs.
Heat came from the capitol building. Recognition came of the importance
of limiting ultra violet rays to the preservation of paintings, photos and
artifacts themselves. The renovation of the electrical system has been in
the offing for several years. We have anticipated this with concerns and
a certain amount of trepidation. Now the time has arrived and we are
underway. Shortly after the construction of this building, it was deeded
to the State of Utah and is maintained by the state that provides janitorial
services, yard care and fixes maintenance problems as they arise. The
Capitol Preservation Board and Executive Director, David Hart, are in charge of
the electrical renovation. The focus of their concerns as well as ours is
completing this project without harm or accident befalling our artifacts.
Moving cases containing artifacts, portraits from walls and other large items
is a very difficult task to accomplish so workmen can do the electrical
work. Pioneer Memorial Museum will remain open to the public with
services we have always provided. Sometimes this will be on a limited
basis. A floor at a time will be closed for construction, beginning with
the third floor of the main building. The carriage house will not be
affected. The projected time frame is 14 months. As we know more
about this project we will have information here on our web site,
www.dupinternational.org. Feel free to call for information before you
plan on coming to the museum. We realize this renovation is an
inconvenience to everyone including daughters who volunteer here, but it is a
necessity.
Sincerely,
